Summary[edit]

Description

Arthur Carpender posing for a photograph, probably in a fake background. Arthur Schuyler Carpender (New Brunswick, New Jersey, -24 October 1884 – Washington, D.C., 10 January 1960) was an American vice admiral that graduated from the United States Naval Academy and was part of the crew of the USS Minnesota, part of Theodore Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet. Carpender was then transferred to the USS Marietta. He was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy on 6 June 1910. Later, in the context of the Banana Wars, he commanded a group of men from the Marietta that was put ashore at Puerto Cortes, to help protect American citizens. In March 1911, Carpender was involved with the fitting out of the new battleship USS Utah. There, he acquired his best-known nickname, "Chips", which was a traditional nickname for a ship's carpenter. Shortly after these events, he married Helena Bleecker Neilson, who was also from New Brunswick.
