Summary[edit]

Description
English: Armoured cars parked in the middle of the road in a heavily-shelled town or village. There is an impression of confusion with a few soldiers standing around in the foreground and others with horses or mules in the background. Clothing, and what appears to be bedding, is piled on the tops and running boards of the armoured cars.

Entry into a recently captured town could be a dangerous affair as there could be pockets of resistance. The general confusion was also an opportunity for men to desert, as one officer wrote in 1918, 'It is very hard not to lose men in a big town if they want to be lost. We collected 1/2 dozen out of a cellar.'
