Summary[edit]

Description

New stars dance among the old. This beautiful dataset is a close look at a section of the galaxy cluster Abell 194, Arp 133, which features NGC 541 and Minkowski’s Object, a young star-forming galaxy. Minkowski’s Object (PGC 73957) is very young and active for an interesting reason. This star formation has been determined to have been triggered by a radio jet emanating from NGC 541, the large elliptical galaxy. Minkowski's Object was the host of a supernova detected in 2010 (SN 2010ib).

This data was just released yesterday. I’ve never processed an elliptical galaxy before, but I’m pretty certain that this one is supposed to have that distinct change in brightness. This is the most extensive processing I’ve done thus far and I screwed up a lot. However, I think this is the best that I could do for now. I filled in the chip gaps with cloned data and borrowed some important details from different channels, adjusting the curves to match. Some of the globular clusters in the chip gap area appear green or red, which is because there are some channels missing there. I didn’t think faking the clusters was necessary. Also, note that the infrared channel did not cover the entire frame and is missing from the top right.

Red: WFC3/IR F125W + WFC3/UVIS F814W Green: WFC3/UVIS F555W
