Text Appearing Before Image:
report there were very few willful trespassesin 1906. This year there have been only 45 trespasses on State land in theentire sixteen counties. No timber trespass of consequence has been made.Of these only three were more than a few trees for firewood, which indicatesa very good condition of the observance of the law in relation to trespass-ing upon the State Forest Preserve, and shows a better condition than hasheretofore existed so far as the Department is advised. During the presentyear there were, of those left over from last year and new ones, 1,289 casesof violations of law of all kinds, of which 186 were placed in the hands ofattorneys and disposed of; 690 were handled by this Department direct.Of the 1,289 cases, 876 have been disposed of, leaving undisposed of at thepresent time 413. Ten actions for trespass are on appeal; 128 at issue incourts of record and 158 actions are to be brought. There were 37 acquit-tals, 1 disagreement and 14 cases dicontinued for want of evidence.

ENVY FOREST, FISH AND GAME COMMISSIONER. 19 Hatcheries. The fish hatcheries have been managed by the foreman of hatcheriesunder the charge of Deputy Commissioner J. D. Lawrence, and Dr. Tarle-ton H. Bean, State Fish Culturist, in a business-like manner, and haveproduced the best results yet obtained. There were 14,979,640 more fishproduced this year and distributed than last year, although in 1905 wedistributed 60,000,000 more than in 1904, and in 1906 we distributed60,000,000 more than in 1905. There were distributed in the year 1907,250,653,900 fish of all kinds. The small-mouth black bass ponds at Constantia have done excellentwork, and from these a considerable number of small-mouth black basswere taken and planted in the waters of the State — the first time thatblack bass hatched in ponds have been distributed in the history of theState. The new hatchery at Linlithgo on the Hudson has been practicallycompleted, together with a very substantial dwelling-house and otherbuildings
