Description |
English: An incomplete and ornate cast copper alloy double looped asymmetrical buckle with an integral bar and a cast copper alloy hinged plate. Medieval or Early Post Medieval (AD 1300 – AD 1600). Length 55mm, width 26.5mm and a maximum thickness of 8.2mm. Weight 16.63g. The outer edge of one loop, which is elongated oval in plan, is angled and has a circular collet at the centre, facing outwards. The top of the collet has a diameter of 6.5mm and has a depth of about 1.5mm. There is a silver lining in the base of the collet which contains the remains of a green setting, possibly glass. The silver was incorporated in order to reflect the light, no doubt. The bar, 12mm in length, is an integral part of the frame and is circular in cross-section with a diameter of 3.6mm. The other loop is oval in plan and its outer edge is widened and also angled. It is decorated, at the centre, with a pair of moulded oblique parallel lines in low relief which form a chevron shape pointing outwards. Both pairs of these parallel lines contain three conjoined circles that are about 1mm in diameter. This pair of features is flanked on either side, at the corners of the loop, by other oblique parallel lines containing similar conjoined circles. At the centre of this outside edge there appears to be a barely visible pin rest. The solid flat cast copper alloy plate is relatively stout, is sub-triangular in plan and has a maximum thickness of 2.2mm. It has a pin slot (8mm x 3mm). The plate is hinged around the bar without a break, indicating perhaps, that the hinge has been welded to form the two loops. One side of the plate has moulded decoration in low relief. This decoration consists of a narrow border around the edge. The part of the border adjacent to the pin slot has eight regularly spaced pellets along its length. Inside the border is a moulded beast with its head at the bar end of the plate. The beast, probably a griffin, is surrounded by field of cross-hatching. The other side of the plate is not decorated and it has a distinct curved wear mark where the outer edge of the loop has been in contact. The attachment end of the plate is broken and missing. The break is old. The pin is also missing. There are traces of gilding on the upper surface of the frame and on both sides of the plate.
It is possible that the plate has been accidentally fitted to the bar, the “wrong way round”, as the decorated face would not be visible when worn. |
