Description
Español: Cuadro del siglo XVII del Cardenal Cisneros en el Convento de San Juan de la Penitencia de Alcalá de Henares (Comunidad de Madrid - España). Es un óleo sobre lienzo, que mide 211 x 149 cm.

Representa al Cardenal Cisneros de pie, calzado con las sandalias de la observancia, con el sayal y cordón franciscanos, revestido de la muceta cardenalicia, con la cabeza tonsurada, sosteniendo en la mano derecha el bastón de mando (semejante al bastón nazarí conservado en el museo del Convento de San Juan de la Penitencia) y un crucifijo de gran tamaño en la mano izquierda.
En la parte superior aparecen varios ángeles. El de la izquierda sostiene una corona y una bandera o estandarte con el escudo de Cisneros, los dos cisnes que hacen alusión a su apellido y las borlas de arzobispo. Los dos ángeles de la derecha sostienen una palma y una cartela donde puede leerse (aunque faltan algunas letras): AFRICANORVM TERROR ET RELIGIONIS CATHOLICAE PROPVGNATOR, es decir, “terror de los africanos” –en alusión a la conquista de Orán– “y defensor de la religión católica”.

En lo alto del cuadro surge un resplandor desde el cielo. En la parte inferior derecha aparece el propio Cisneros, acompañado de tres frailes franciscanos, a las puertas de un convento donde es recibido por varias religiosas.
