Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a copy of an aerial photograph. The annotations show that it covers the area of marshy coastland near the Belgian village of Lombartzyde. The numbers below the north arrow identify the flight and give the flight date of 4 September 1917. A line of up cast earth, possibly in front of a trench, is identified as a 'nose trench' possibly because it sticks out.

The photograph has no original caption. During the course of World War I aerial photographs became an important military tool in the identification of enemy positions and movements. This led to increasing development of camouflage to hide guns and equipment.
