Text Appearing Before Image:
\ \ When the opening A is made much larger the propagation takesplace as shown in Fig. VITb and can be explained0 by a combination ofHuygheus wave theory and Fresnels theory of interference. Severalmethods were used tc show these phenomena. In the experiments per-formed, the incident waive front was circular instead of plane, but 3 Barton, Text Book of Sound, page 73-30.
Text Appearing After Image:
26 the same reasoning applies as given above and shows that in this cc.sethe curvature of the incident wave will, or will net, be changed ac-cording to the width of the opening. Photographs Nos. J2 and 13 were taken before the final form ofthe apparatus had been adopted. The air puffs were allowed to im-pinge upon the water surface between two wooden blocks which extendedabove the water and appear as the dark rectangles in the picture. Atfirst sight these photographs seem to show nicely what would be ex-pected from the theory, but since the bars were not immersed in the••rater, the surface film rising along their edges distorted the wavesas they left the opening. This action of a film changing the appar-ent wave length of the ripples was shown by Dorsey . This difficultywas overcome as in the previous experiments by barely submerging thebars. Photographs Nos. 14 and 15 show the result of single openingsbut of different widths, whereas No. 16 shows the interference phe-nomena produ
