n that concert chorus above as thefirst born sons of Jehovahs love. May we then In the name of God advancing, Plow and sow and labor now;Let there be when evening cometh Honest sweat ui)On the brow. Then will come the Master As work stops, at set of sun.Saying, as he pays the wages, Good, faithful one, Well done. MEMORIAL ADDRESS Delivered at the Third Quinquennial Reunion of theFretz Family at Bedminster, Pa., August BY PKOF. A. F. K. KROUT, OF PHILADELPHIA. Lord McCauley saj^s: A people who take nopride in the noble achievements of remote ances-tors will never achieve anything worthy to beremembered with honest pride by their remotedescendants. I never go through Germantown, near Phila-delphia, but my veneration moves within me; forthe ancient buildings are so well protected fromthe ravages of time and decay, and bring back tomemory the history of our Colonial times; buthow much more beautiful to behold an ancientfamily which has prospered and flourished overthe vicissitudes of time.

DR. C. D. FRETZ. — 79— ■ It is a noble faculty of our nature whichenables us to connect our thoughts, sympathiesand happiness with what is distant in place ortime: and, looking before and after, to hold com-munion at once with our ancestors and our poster-ity. There is a moral and affectionate respect forour ancestors which elevates tlie character andimproves the heart. Next to the sense of religious duty and moralfeeling, I hardly know what should bear withstronger obligation on a liberal and enlightenedmind than a consciousness of an allegiance withexcellence which is departed. A consciousness, too, that in its acts and conduct, and even in itssentiments and thoughts it may be actively oper-ating on the happiness of those that come after. Historians would probably record our ancestryas of humble origin, but an honest and unpreju-diced record will show that they always stood firmfor the noble principles that humanity may live for. They gave their first allegiance to their Godand
