The atacama large millimetre array is in the process of kicking the butts of every telescope on earth at the moment (yes, including Mopra), and it's not even finished yet. It's missing the extended set of dishes, which will be spread out over another 100 km or so of the plateau, giving it the best zoom of any radio/mm telescope ever. I've seen some early results and it's amazing. (Of course, because it's so zoomed in, ALMA can't do big surveys like we can. It does amazing resolution of tiny patches of sky, but it would take forever to do the whole sky in that kind of depth. It's a trade off, which is why we need individual dishes like Mopra to tell ALMA where the interesting 'blobs' are, so they can zoom in and tell us just how strangely shapes these clouds and star systems really are.) |
