Summary[edit]

Description

Spring Heeled Jack is an English folklore legend that would have appeared in the Victorian era, being able to perform extraordinarily high heels. The earliest known sighting of Spring Heeled Jack happened in 1837. Other possible sightings were reported throughout England from London to Sheffield and Liverpool, although they were especially frequent in the London suburbs and later in the Midlands and Scotland. Many theories have been proposed to explain the nature and identity of Spring Heeled Jack, none of which has fully explained the phenomenon. The urban legend of Spring Heeled Jack acquired an immense popularity in its time thanks to the histories on its quirky appearance and its ability to make extraordinary jumps, to the point of becoming to be the protagonist of several works of fiction. Spring Heeled Jack was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a frightening and terrifying appearance, a diabolical physiognomy that included sharp metallic claws on his fingers and eyes that "looked like red fireballs." One report stated that under a black cloak he wore a helmet and a tight white garment like "rubber". Many stories also mention a "demonic" aspect. It was said that Spring Heeled Jack was tall and thin, adding some reports that he could exhale blue and white flames. At least two people said they could speak understandable English.
