Deutsch: Bauprinzip der Ökosphäre, stark vereinfacht:

Ökotope bilden mit ähnlichen Nachbar-Ökotopen gemeinsame Ökochoren.
Ökochoren bilden mit ähnlichen Nachbar-Ökochoren gemeinsame Ökoregionen.
Ökoregionen bilden mit ähnlichen Nachbar-Ökoregionen gemeinsame Ökozonen.
Alle Ökozonen bilden gemeinsam die Ökosphäre.

Ökoton: Ein Übergangs- oder Saumökotop zwischen zwei Ökotopen etc.

Ökotop ist synonym zu Biotop.
Ökochore ist synonym zu Ökotop-Gefüge.
Ökozone ist synonym zu Biom. Terrestrische Ökozonen sind synonym zu Geozonen / Vegetationszonen.
Ökosphäre ist synonym zu Biosphäre.

Für die irdische Biosphäre werden vierzehn terrestrische Biome (mit insgesamt 867 Ökoregionen) unterschieden. Dazu treten zwölf Biome des Süßwassers und elf Biome der Meere:
