The photos kept here are used in Wikipedias all over the world, as well as all the Wiki sister projects, schools, museums, organisations, and thousands of others that get their photos from Commons. Purple martin in flight
  • Gallery: Commons:Featured_pictures/Animals/Birds/Passeriformes#Family_:_Hirundinidae_(Swallows)
  •  Info Purple martin in flight, slowing down as it approaches its nest. Spent a long time try to get a sharp photo of these very fast birds -- I was happy with this one.
Note: I tried something with the sky that I haven't attempted before, pulling a cloud from another shot taken at the same place at the same time from roughly the same direction. I don't know if that's too much retouching for FPC, but erring on the side of disclosure (it didn't affect the bird itself -- just improved the background a little). all by — Rhododendrites talk23:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment It is mentioned but that doesn't make it acceptable. We can't go around replacing backgrounds. Where would that stop? Charlesjsharp (talk) 21:09, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Why can't we? Restricting FP to the rules of photojournalism and photo contests would leave out a bunch of interesting candidates. Julesvernex2 (talk) 21:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • You have never manipulated a background (or a foreground)? All of the out-of-focus twigs, distracting leaves, bird/bug-specks in the background, etc. that you've photographed -- you've never removed them? Pay no mind to extraordinary feats of AI-enabled sharpening, AI-based denoising, selective tone adjustments, and all other manner of post-processing, but add a cloud (a cloud in the sky at that place and at that time, even) and all of a sudden I've crossed a bright line? I'm not saying it shouldn't matter -- I know it'll go against some people's sensibilities, which is why I highlighted it in the nomination statement, and anyone is free to oppose if they wish -- but this Arbiter of What's Acceptable stuff is too much. — Rhododendrites talk21:51, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Technically, any panorama which includes sky and clouds will have several spots in the sky where parts are from other neighboring photos, so in fact replaced and often tweaked/reshaped by the processing program to look nice. I can guarantee that the sky never looked exactly like in this image, because it is a product of the program that stitched the panorama. We accept that without question because they are declared as panoramas and we know they are "manipulated". As long as the alteration is openly declared in a very clear manner (which has been made here), I see no problem with entering such photos here at FPC. It's just a matter of classification, and in each case votes can decide how much they are willing to tolerate in an FPC. Ideally it would be great if the original was found in the file's upload history so that we can see each step, I think that would help people decide how they are going to vote. In this case, I suspect there is no great difference. --Cart (talk) 22:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • For good measure, I've uploaded the version before the sky adjustment and reverted. Note that the uploaded file is also before another pass at tone adjustments/white balancing so it looks slightly different in other [more mundane] ways. — Rhododendrites talk22:40, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is indeed a small but surprisingly effective change! A small nitpick: those beautiful steel blue feathers above the eyes got quite a bit duller after the tonal adjustments. Julesvernex2 (talk) 12:18, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support -- WildMouse76 (talk) 22:33, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose I agree with Charles that heavy-handed manipulations (like sky replacements) applied to images which will be used in a context where the audience can expect a realistic depiction of the subject shouldn't be featured here. As image manipulations seem to come up more often these days, there might be a need for a more in-depth discussion about what's ok and what's not. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 04:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • A discussion has been opened on the FPC talk page. --Cart (talk) 12:07, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "heavy-handed manipulation" didn't change the subject at all, so if the point is to ensure a photo of a martin looks like a martin that's irrelevant here. If it's to ensure a martin could be seen in front of a realistic background, the fact that it's the same sky from the same place/time would seem pretty realistic. So what's left is an arbitrary line whereby using AI to manipulate an image's noise/sharpness, stitching images, using content-aware fill, outright removing pieces like disturbing plants and smears, etc. is acceptable and this is not. I would feel less strongly about this if people just said "it offends my photographer's sensibilities in ways that a wide range of other manipulations and 'unrealities' do not" rather than act as though this is unrealistic but the rest of what we see at FPC is completely realistic. — Rhododendrites talk13:51, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

SHORT DESCRIPTION
Hi TOUMOU, I see that Rhododendrites has helped you with the categories and fixing the description, thanks for that. Documentation of the photo is just as important for FPC as a good image, so take a look at the changes that have been made on the file page. Good information on the file page will always improve your chances of getting a photo promoted to FP, since info makes it more valuable to the Wiki project. Therefore, would you please add the location to the photo too. If you don't know it, please ask the photographer Skander zarrad. I have fixed the gallery link for you. You need to specify both the right page and the section. When you nominate an image here, you become sort of a "temporary caretaker" of that photo, and it's up to you to make sure everything is fixed and correct. Tanner at work, Medina of Marrakesh
Nice photo! Are you sure he is a tanner or has there been a simple mix-up in the translation? A tanner is someone who process the raw hides into leather, a very hazardous and revolting job. After that the leather goes to a currier who dyes and prepare the leather before it can be made into different things by a leather worker. Traditionally, such craftsmen are called "saddlers" even if they make other things from leather than saddles. Perhaps he performs all three professions and we only see one of them (leather working) here in the photo. Love the cat! :-) --Cart (talk) 17:46, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comments about profession depicted
  •  Comment Hi IssamBarhoumi, what a great photo! However, what he is doing is a bit mislabeled. What he is doing is not engraving, but it is very common for people outside the handicraft trade to know the difference. ;-) Engraving is when you cut away material to make patterns (no hammer involved for engraving metals). What he is doing is called chasing, part of the repoussé and chasing techniques used by copper, silver and goldsmiths. Chasing is when you hammer in a pattern into the material, and repoussé is when you hammer out patterns from the backside of the material. I have fixed up the description and the categories for you, but would you mind if the file was renamed too so that is showed the right profession. I'm so happy that we finally have a really good photo for the wiki articles and chasers on Wikidata. Coppersmiths often use many different techniques to make the patterns on their work, and the right terminology for all of them is not easy. Best, --Cart (talk) 15:25, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This fragment of the decoration of the palace of the Persian king Darius the Great, is an element taken from the frieze of archers found in the Achaemenid palace of Susa. The work of wall art is made up of glazed bricks with reliefs, of which unfortunately the shine of the enamels used has now decomposed under the effect of time and humidity, which explains why it cannot be very specific regarding the standards of the images presented, best regards.--Pierre André (talk) 16:22, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the case using Google and Wikipedia. The place is some 180 km from Juba, the capital town, it is definitely not a city like London or Tokyo, but it is a town of 490 000+ population, it has airport, banks, schools and university, telecommunication company, TV and shops of electronics, churches of several confessions, etc. There is a school and a clinic in Kimotong. So, I do not think that they are so innocent to not understand the consequences of photography. And I agree that the photo has documentary value and encyclopedic value. LexKurochkin (talk) 07:00, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me, but do you believe to know better than me where I was? it was not in the city of Kimotong, but a remote village in the province. And that's precisely why we went there. It was not a photo tour behind a mall in Juba. There is no shops, no current, no telecom, no transport or something like that in the area. The closest water well could be 1 hour away by foot. Telling this wiöl surely make no difference and people will believe whatever they want, but whatsoever. Poco a poco (talk) 07:24, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

180 km without any transport means (or public transport options) and with no asphalt roads (a 4x4 is required) is not what you may think of (definitely not a 1 and a half hours smooth drive). In fact, wit a 4x4 we couldn't drive often faster than 30 km/h Poco a poco (talk) 07:26, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's complicated. I'm part American, part European but mostly Sub-Saharan African. Wolverine XI 03:41, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And Real Madrid fan? you're good ;) At least we have that in common Poco a poco (talk) 03:58, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still new to the game, having only started to support Real Madrid in October or November of 2021. Coming back to what matters, Poco a poco, having lived in Africa for more than 17 years, I am the best person to understand the mindset of black Africans. My biggest problem is that you're photographing a naked black woman, probably the most discriminated group in the world. White people will never understand black people, and that's okay. Looking at this picture makes me feel ashamed to be black. I should just stop talking now. Wolverine XI 11:18, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I believe in the motto of Wikipedia, where every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what Wikipedia is about. I don't understand why an affected party of an issue should be the best person to talk about it. Most people in those remoted villages of South Sudan walked around naked, that's how things are there, and they love scarification too and show it proudly. We were all the time with a lot of local guides who know the area, the people and the customs. --Poco a poco (talk) 15:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
